What is Ameloblastoma?
Ameloblastoma is a rare, benign or cancerous odontogenic tumor in jaw bone. It originates from residual odontogenic epithelial cells. It represents approximately 1% of oral tumors. About 80% of ameloblastoma occur in mandible (lower jaw) mainly in the third molar region, and the remaining 20% in maxilla (upper jaw).
Ameloblastoma is typically slow-growing, benign but locally aggressive with high recurrent rate. Though very rare, it can be metastatic and spread to distant body sites, most commonly in lungs (75-88% cases).
